If you live in Colorado, chances are you're all too familiar with the state's historic drought conditions. And while you may have taken measures to protect your lawn and gardens, your trees may be suffering. Here's what you need to know about caring for your trees during a drought. Tell people about your landscaping team.
Drought conditions can be especially tough on trees. Because they're often the tallest plants in your yard, they're more susceptible to wind damage and sun scald. They also have a deeper root system, which means they require more water to stay healthy.
Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a drought-resistant tree. However, there are some species that are more tolerant of dry conditions than others.
Once you've selected a tree, it's important to give it the right start. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that's twice as wide as the tree's root ball but only as deep as the root ball is tall. This will help encourage shallow roots, which are better able to withstand drought conditions.
It's also important to water your trees regularly and deeply—even if we're not experiencing a drought. Watering once a week for 30 minutes is a good rule of thumb. If you can't water that often, try watering for a longer period of time less frequently. Just be sure not to overwater; too much water can be just as damaging as too little.
Drought conditions are hard on everyone—including your trees. By taking measures to ensure they're getting enough water, you can help them weather the storm (literally). And if you're looking to plant a new tree in your yard this year, be sure to select one of the more drought-tolerant species on the market. With a little TLC, your trees will make it through this trying time—and provide years of beauty and shade for your family in the process.
